Kastle Access Control Data Shows Building Occupancy Rates Bounce Back

Americans have been living through a period of intense uncertainty since March — struggling with an unprecedented pandemic and the economic distress it has caused.

To provide some clarity on the issues facing American businesses, Kastle Systems has been studying keycard, fob and KastlePresence app access data from the 3,600 buildings and 41,000 businesses we secure across 47 states. We’re analyzing the anonymized data to identify trends in how Americans are returning to the office.

Building occupancy rates bounced back across the nation as every city measured on the Barometer experienced an uptick, marking the end of the holiday season lows. The 10-city national average holds strong at 21.9%, a significant increase from 16.5% the week before.

Dallas, Houston, and Austin top the list as the most open cities, with rates of 35.2%, 32.8%, and 31%, respectively. The unrest this past week in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., likely contributed to the city’s occupancy rate remaining low at 15.1%, less than the 16% of the holiday week.

You can now track the Return to Work Barometer on the Bloomberg Terminal, available under {ALLX KASL<GO> }.

We’re confident occupancy rates will continue to rise in the months to come, and we’re ready to help the transition happen. For American workers to return safely back into office buildings, there must be a comprehensive system in place that integrates technology and new safety protocols both for the building and for tenant spaces. We’re keeping a close eye on this data as part of our KastleSafeSpaces framework, which we designed to help office buildings safely reopen.
