Yes. A modern access control card reader supports multiple credential technologies in a single device, rather than requiring separate hardware for each. Kastle’s card reader door lock systems support proximity cards, smart cards, HID credentials, mobile credential door reader technology via Apple and Android NFC, and Bluetooth, all in one RFID door reader, so buildings can run older badges, HID credentials, and newer mobile credentials side by side during a migration.

Many buildings already run on HID credentials, and a better managed security solution keeps them working instead of replacing them. Kastle’s readers support HID iClass, Seos, and other HID proximity-based credentials, so existing badges keep working on day one. It’s the same interoperability story as Aliro: you get choice and security together, building on what you already have instead of starting over.

Generally, mobile credentials offer stronger security than a standard proximity card reader or fob, since they rely on encrypted communication and can require additional authentication on the device itself. Kastle’s smart card reader access control supports high-security standards alongside mobile credentials and can use modern OSDP card reader communication for encrypted data transfer, as well as legacy Wiegand, so buildings get the security benefits of mobile credentials while keeping support for existing proximity and smart cards. Mobile credentials are also less likely to be shared, since no one hands over their phone to a friend the way they might a keycard or fob. Finally, the credential itself sits in the phone's secure area. If a user loses their phone, they are more likely to remotely disable it, for example with Find My, which also disables the credential and keeps a stolen phone from granting a bad actor access.

A weatherproof access control reader needs to be rated for exposure to moisture, dust, and temperature extremes. Kastle’s door readers are IP67 rated and tested to perform in temperatures ranging from -35℃ to 70℃, so they hold up in exposed entries, parking structures, and other outdoor installations without a separate model.
