Key highlights

  • $63,000 saved over 18 months – Wellcraft’s MobileSentry deployment cost roughly 50% less per month than a security guard, saving the company $63,000 over the course of one project.

  • Six cameras, one virtual perimeter – Kastle installed six cameras and supporting equipment to create a virtual perimeter around the job site.

  • Crane climbers and trespassers deterred – The system deterred crane climbers and other intruders who tried to access the site throughout the project.

  • A live audio challenge before guards or police get involved – When the smart cameras generate a video alarm, Kastle’s operations center can issue a live audio challenge and notify site management and police as needed.

  • Two years of cloud video as evidence – Footage is stored in the cloud for up to two years, giving Wellcraft evidence for police and a way to settle on-site disputes.

Kastle Systems services were the perfect solution for loss prevention and deterring trespassers. Their offerings were also instrumental in monitoring the progress of the job and ensuring on-site safety.

About Wellcraft Construction Company

Wellcraft Construction Company is a general contractor that builds commercial real estate, multifamily, and hotel projects in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area.

The challenge

Vandalism, graffiti, and theft are constant concerns for Wellcraft’s superintendents and project managers at a job site, and stolen materials or tools can delay a project’s schedule and add overtime costs to hit a deadline. Heavy equipment and cranes on site also draw pranksters and thrill-seekers looking for an attractive nuisance to climb or tamper with.

Wellcraft had traditionally relied on a security guard service to address these risks, but the results were mixed: guards who didn’t show up, guards who fell asleep on shift, and a service that was both expensive and, at times, part of the problem it was meant to solve. Wellcraft needed something that performed better and more consistently, at a lower cost.

The solution

Kastle’s MobileSentry solution gave Wellcraft smart cameras, an audio deterrent, and real-time monitoring that could replace an after-hours security guard at the site. Kastle’s privately owned, U.S.-based operations center monitors the video alarms the cameras generate, responding with a live audio challenge and notifying site management and police as needed.

The solution also stores video in the cloud for up to two years, giving Wellcraft evidence for police, a way to contest frivolous claims, and a record to settle disputes on site. Live video is viewable online or through an app, with Kastle handling the data over a 4G connection; Wellcraft needed only to supply power and a place to mount the equipment, with solar options also available.

The outcome

Kastle installed six cameras and the associated equipment at the construction site, creating a virtual perimeter around it. Over the course of the project, the system deterred crane climbers and other trespassers who tried to access the site.

The monthly cost came in at roughly 50% less than a security guard, and over the 18-month term of the project, Wellcraft saved $63,000.
