Workers’ comp claims nearly disappear: how high-resolution video protected a century-old forging company’s bottom line
High-megapixel cameras gave Specialty Ring Products the evidence it needed to address workers’ compensation claims and declining productivity.
Key highlights
-
Workers’ comp claims nearly disappeared – since installing Kastle’s video system, Specialty Ring Products has seen claims drop off almost entirely, and expects a significant reduction in its insurance premiums at its next renewal.
-
Round-the-clock oversight lifted productivity – ownership can now review staff activity across the shop floor at any time, a change leadership credits with a noticeable increase in employee productivity.
-
Remote VideoGuarding® adds an after-hours layer – smart analytic software flags actionable events onsite after hours and alerts Kastle’s operations center in real time, at a lower cost than posting an onsite guard.
-
An “evergreen” system with no surprise costs – Kastle’s maintenance plan covers break/fix service, lift rentals, upgrades, and onsite camera cleanings, so SRP never faces an unbudgeted expense to keep the system current.
-
High-megapixel cameras built for evidence – cameras were selected and placed for the resolution, frame rate, and storage capacity needed to capture usable visual evidence of workplace incidents.
Partnering with Kastle has helped us to sustain and grow our business and increase profitability. The cost savings that their managed service model has delivered has been awesome!
About Specialty Ring Products
Specialty Ring Products (SRP) is a family-owned manufacturer of precision forged rings for the aerospace, defense, and bearing industries, based in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1890, the company employs roughly 50 workers in its industrial metal shop and holds AS9100 Rev D certification, with recognized capabilities in near net shapes, precision machining, and inventory stocking programs.
The challenge
SRP’s owner and President, Alex Jennings, wanted to reduce workers’ compensation claims. He suspected some of the claims coming in weren’t legitimate, but had no evidence to back up that suspicion.
At the same time, internal reporting showed a noticeable dip in productivity among some employees, with no way to pin down the cause.
A video monitoring system looked like a possible answer to both problems, but only if it could deliver high-resolution footage from cameras placed in the right areas, with enough storage to keep that footage accessible when it was needed. SRP also wanted a security partner with a proven track record and a dedicated service and maintenance plan to keep the system running and up to date, rather than another vendor relationship it would have to manage on its own.
The solution
SRP chose Kastle Systems as its security partner. Kastle designed a video system built around high-megapixel cameras, selecting the resolution, frame rate, and storage capacity needed to capture visual evidence that could accurately identify workplace infractions.
Kastle’s maintenance and service plan covers break/fix support, lift rentals, necessary upgrades, onsite camera cleanings, and unlimited customer support. The system is evergreen for the life of the contract, so SRP doesn’t have to budget separately for maintaining or upgrading it later.
SRP also added Remote VideoGuarding, Kastle’s monitoring service that pairs the installed cameras with smart analytic software. The software can detect potential security threats on its own and instantly alert Kastle’s operations center to actionable events onsite after hours.
The outcome
Workers’ compensation claims have all but disappeared at SRP, and the company expects a significant reduction in its insurance premiums at its next renewal. Management also now has another set of eyes on operations, with staff activity recorded around the clock, a change that has meaningfully increased employee productivity.
Remote VideoGuarding’s event-based, live monitoring support has also improved after-hours security, at a lower cost than the onsite guards SRP would otherwise need.
“As a successful, family-owned business for over 100 years, we at Specialty Ring Products recognize how important it is to adapt to new technologies,” says Alex Jennings, SRP’s owner and President.
